Solving Math Word
Problem by Mrs. Nancy – Math Teacher
This is how to solve
mathemathics word problem. Word Problem can be very challenging for many students and some of
the basic thing is to thinkabout how to figure out the problem. Here is an example: A collage student plans to spend
$420 on books for one semester. He also plans to spend $20 per week on pizza.
The fall semester is 18 weeks long. How much will he need for books and pizza?
Basicly, we have to figure out that the student
will spend some money. He spending $420 on books and $20 per week on pizza. We
know that the fall semester is 18 weeks long. So, we going to take $20 x 18 =
360. Then, he spending $360 on pizza for the semester and $420 on books for the
semester. If we want to know how much he will need for the books and pizza, we
add $360 + $420 = $720. He will need $720
for books and pizza.
6. Two Variable Word Problem
This
is part two, solving puzzles and Riddles (otherwise known as word problems)
using two variables). So we doing a couple more example.
Next
problem.
a. A
first number plus twice a second number is 23. Twice the first number plus the
second number is 31. Find the numbers.
We
looking two numbers which we calling it the first number and the second number
In
the first number we call it x and the second number we call it y. Now, we need
to write two equations.
The
first sentence, x plus twice the second number so that would be 2y is equal 23.
That’s the first equation.
Second
equation is 2 times x plus the second number which is y equal to 31.
From
two equation we can decide what will we use, subsitution or addition method.
I
think I will use the substitution method.
From
the first equation I need to subtract 2y from each side. So that x = 23-2y.
Put
that x to the second equation 2x + y = 31.

+ 46 = 31
We
put positive 3y in each sides
-3y
+ 46 + 3y = 31 + 3y
Then
subtract with 31 in each side

The
we find the first number.

= 23 - 2y. We know that y is 5, so we put 5 in y

The sum of two number is 16. The first number plus 2 more than 3
times the second equation is 18. Find the number!
Again we have the situation to find the
first and the second number. We write the two equation. The first number is x
and the second number is y.
So, x + y =16
Look at the question again. The first
number plus 2 more than 3 times the second equation is 18. So, x + (3y + 2) =
18.
We can simplify the
second equation to be x+3y= 16. So, we have x+3y=16 and x+y= 16
.
Now, we have to find x and
y. We may multiply the second equation with -1. So it will be
x+3y= 16
-x-y= -16. We get 2y=0 and y=0.
Now, we apply y=0 on the first equation. We get x+y= 16
x+0= 16, so x=16. Let's check.
For the first equation, 0+16=16. For the second equation, 16+2=18. These are right. Well, the numbers are 16 and 0.

-x-y= -16. We get 2y=0 and y=0.
Now, we apply y=0 on the first equation. We get x+y= 16
x+0= 16, so x=16. Let's check.
For the first equation, 0+16=16. For the second equation, 16+2=18. These are right. Well, the numbers are 16 and 0.
